The Mombasa County Assembly has announced a public forum to discuss the renaming of Mombasa’s so-called Mama Ngina Waterfront Park, which opened in late 2019. The forum will be held on 4 March 2020 at 9:30 am at the Tononoka Social Hall.

The forum has been called in response to Okoa Mombasa’s petition in November 2019, which requested public participation on the issue of renaming the park. Such public participation is required by Kenya’s Constitution.

Okoa Mombasa considers the name “Mama Ngina” Waterfront Park to be a gross deletion and obfuscation of an important aspect of the history of the people of Mombasa. We believe the selected name should signal a reclamation of the historical and cultural heritage of the people of Mombasa, in particular, and the Coast, in general.

Okoa Mombasa encourages all members of the public to attend. If you are unable to attend, you may submit written comments to the Assembly by e-mail at Countyassemblymombasa@gmail.com or by delivery to the Office of the Clerk, Mombasa County Assembly Buildings P.O Box 80438-80100.

Written comments must received no later than Thursday, 5 March 2020.
